The Lotherton Hall Christmas Experience

There’s something truly special about introducing your children to the magic of Christmas, and this year we decided to visit Lotherton Hall’s festive experience. Nestled just outside Leeds (and an easy drive from North Yorkshire), Lotherton Hall transforms into a winter wonderland each December, and I can honestly say it lived up to every bit of the hype.

Meeting Mrs Claus and Festive Baking

Our adventure began with a visit to Mrs Claus herself. The girls were immediately enchanted as we stepped into her cosy kitchen, filled with the warm scent of ginger and cinnamon. We spent a lovely 15 mins decorating gingerbread men – Arabella (my 6-year-old) took the task very seriously, carefully decorating exactly how she wanted it, while 3-year-old Evie was more interested in eating the gingerbread than actually decorating it!

After our baking session, we made our way to the beautiful wishing tree where both girls hung their wishes. I won’t share what they wished for (apparently that means it won’t come true!), but watching their little faces as they carefully tied their wishes to the branches was one of those precious parenting moments that makes all the chaos worthwhile.

Santa’s Log Cabin

The highlight, of course, was meeting the man himself. Santa’s log cabin was beautifully decorated and felt genuinely magical. Arabella was bursting with excitement, rattling off everything she wanted to tell Santa. Evie, however, was feeling a little shy and clung to my leg when it was our turn to go in.

Santa was wonderful with both of them – he didn’t rush, gave Evie plenty of time to warm up to him, and had a proper conversation with Arabella about what she’d been up to this year. Both girls received an adorable teddy penguin as their gift, which they immediately cuddled and have barely put down since!

The Elf Village

After our Santa visit, we headed to the Elf Village where a gorgeous yurt was serving hot drinks. I treated myself to what might have been the best hot chocolate I’ve had all year – rich, creamy, and topped with marshmallows. The atmosphere in the yurt was brilliant, with festive music playing and families milling about, all wrapped up warm and soaking in the Christmas spirit.

The girls were thrilled to discover the face painting hut. Arabella chose a snowman on her cheek while Evie opted for a Christmas tree. Then came a highlight for them – roasting marshmallows on the open fire. Though I’ll admit, more marshmallow ended up on faces and gloves than actually eaten!

The Enchanted Woodland Walk

After leaving the elf village, we set off on the woodland walk to see the festive lights. The path wound through the trees, illuminated by twinkling lights and festive displays. There were interactive activities dotted along the route which kept the girls engaged – pressing buttons and spotting different characters among the trees.

However, by this point, little Evie was flagging. The combination of cold air, excitement, and a skipped afternoon nap caught up with her. Her little nose was pink, she was rubbing her eyes, and asking to be carried. We made the decision to cut our walk a bit short and head back – sometimes knowing when to call it a day is part of successful family day out!

Would We Recommend It?

Absolutely! The Lotherton Hall Christmas experience offers something for various ages, though I’d say it’s particularly perfect for children aged 2-8. The whole experience took us about 2.5 hours (though we could have stayed longer if Evie had been up for it).

Top Tips for Your Visit:

  • Book in advance – slots fill up quickly, especially weekends
  • Wrap up warm – most activities are outdoors
  • Go earlier in the day – younger children cope better before they’re tired
  • Allow 2-3 hours – enough time to enjoy everything without rushing

Perfect for: Families with children aged 2-10, grandparents’ special trips, creating Christmas memories.

The girls are still talking about our day at Lotherton Hall, and those little teddy penguins have earned a permanent spot on their beds. Sometimes the best family days out aren’t the biggest or flashiest – they’re the ones that create genuine magic and memories. Lotherton Hall’s Christmas experience delivered exactly that.
